The Breakdown ~60 days since launch
Last time I wrote one of these, we were at 45 days and 44 members. Now we're at roughly 60 days and 61 members.
I know. I also can't believe it.
The thing that changed everything was finally launching referralreef.com. Within 24 hours of flipping the switch, 34 applications came in. That's not marketing magic, that's just proof that fractional leaders are hungry for a real way to trade referrals. Not a Facebook group. Not a 500-person Slack where no one knows your name. A network where introductions are warm, tracked, and actually paid.
So, 60 days in, here's what we actually look like.
The Roster
We're at 61 members now. Here's the breakdown by what people actually do:
- Marketing & Brand: 18 members. CMOs, growth strategists, brand leaders, content ops, event marketers. If you need to stop throwing money at ads that don't convert, these are your people.
- Operations: 8 members. COOs, ops consultants, AI strategists. The people who come in when everything is "fine" but nothing is getting done.
- Sales & Revenue: 6 members. CROs, VP Sales, growth leads, LinkedIn outreach specialists. The ones who fix your pipeline without the enterprise software snake oil.
- Finance & Accounting: 6 members. CFOs, controllers, strategic finance. Early-stage through mid-market.
- Product & Tech: 6 members. CTOs, product strategists, Shopify developers, healthcare devs. The builders.
- Leadership: 3 members. Executive coaches, fractional C-suite advisors.
- People & Culture / HR: 3 members. Fractional CHROs, team culture advisors, HR consultants.
- Enablement, Security, Creative, etc: The rest of the smattering.
The geography
We're now in 20+ states plus Canada and a few curious international eyes. Heavy presence still in California, Ohio, Texas, New York, and the Southeast. One of us is still writing this from Hawaii (hi, still me).
What's actually new besides headcount
- The website is live. Finally. No more explaining Referral Reef via novel-length DMs.
- The newsletter is growing. We're at 392 subscribers now, with a 67% open rate. For context, industry average is somewhere around 20-25%. You all actually read this thing.
- Programming that isn't boring. We now run Speed Dating Happy Hours, Pipeline Power Hours, Fireside Chats (last week: AI - where it's worth it vs. where a human needs to be in the loop), a Speaker Series (shoutout to Joe Hinderstein), and a monthly Town Hall. This isn't "here's a Zoom link, good luck." People are showing up.
- LinkedIn Post Pod. 18+ members strong and growing.
- Partnerships starting to form. A few names you might recognize have been helping spread the word and we've got a few more collaborations cooking.
The honest part (where most communities would BS you)
Referral stats: We've had 17 referrals logged through the network in the past 6 weeks. Some are in active conversations. A few have closed. Money is starting to move, but I'm not going to stand here and pretend everyone is swimming in work yet. Communities take 6-12 months to produce real deal flow, and we're barely at month two.
I'm telling you this because I'd rather be honest than post fake "we've generated $2M in pipeline!" nonsense.
What we do have is profiles getting filled out, people booking calls with each other, actual relationships forming, and a referral value calculator that will probably make you depressed about how much money you've left on the table by not tracking your intros. (Conservative math: 4 referrals a month x 20% close rate x $5K-10K deal size x 10% referral fee = $600/month you're not collecting. That's $7,200 a year. Go look.)
That is the boring, unsexy work that produces real referrals later. I'd rather have slow real trust than fast fake transactions.
What happens next
If you're in the Reef and your profile isn't complete, fix it. No one refers someone who looks like a ghost. If you have capacity and I haven't matched you with an open opportunity yet, tell me what you're actually looking for. I probably know someone.
If you want to join, we're adding new members weekly. I'm picky about fit. The Reef isn't a networking group where everyone collects business cards and disappears. It's a working community.
And fair warning: we only have about 14 spots left at the $21/month rate before I have to bump the price.
Thanks for being here.
